Here are some free tips to help improve your credit:

Make all of your monthly payments on time if possible and catch up on all past due open accounts
Pay off all judgments or liens
Pay off any recently reported collections
If your collections are more than a year old or of medical origin, you should consult a credit repair expert
Work to keep all of your credit card balances below 30% of your credit limit
Keep your credit cards open with a small balance so the credit bureaus will recognize current on-time payments
If you have no open accounts, contact your local bank or credit union and request a secured credit card. This is a great way to build or re-establish your credit. Lenders like to see two to three open accounts
Limit your credit applications, as your credit score can drop with excessive inquiries

Taking these steps will not only help you qualify for a home loan, but will also save you money on credit cards, car loans and insurance.

Additional things to do to help qualify for a home loan:

Pay your rent on time and pay with a personal check-this will enable banks or lenders to document that you have made your rental payments on time
Strive to consistently maintain full time employment
Deposit any additional money if possible in your bank account-lenders look favorably on reserves
If you are self employed, start claiming more income on your taxes if you haven’t already because lenders will typically only give you credit for the income reported after expenses are taken out
Hold off on buying that new car or expensive items that you’ve been wanting to purchase-keeping your debts low is very important when trying to qualify for a home loan
